CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The recent story out of New Orleans is typical of a trend. Police there announced that 14 people had been arrested in a golf club theft ring. Some 1,200 golf clubs were recovered, while countless more had already been sold on eBay.
One of the suspects arrested was a golf pro. In one incident, burglars cut open a row of lockers at Tidelands Golf and Country Club in Galliano and stole all the clubs.
Even touring pros are not immune. More than one club has disappeared from a bag in an unguarded moment at a tournament. And even whole sets have been stolen, just ask Nancy Lopez, whose clubs disappeared from a flight to a tour stop some years ago.

Inventor, Matt Gilewicz, spent four years developing the Pro Defender Series bag alarm after he was the victim of club theft on two occasions at golf venues in Hertfordshire. He said:
"Golf bags full of expensive equipment are a prime target for the opportunist thief who can simply walk up to an unattended bag and carry it away."
The Pro Defender Series alarm is a unique concept and more effective than anything currently on the market. It warns of unauthorised movement of a golf bag, sending a radio signal to a pocket-sized remote receiver held by the owner.

Developed by an amateur golfer from Hertfordshire, the Pro Defender bag alarm aims to cut down the estimated £70 million worth of golf equipment stolen from golf clubs in Europe every year. Matt Gilewicz was a victim of club theft on two occassions at clubs in his home county and set about developing a gadget to prevent it happening again.
